Saturday
Gift Week Fund Raising - 2007
Saturday
morning saw the first dedicated Children's Service at All Saints'.
After his welcoming address, Revd Cumberlidge asked one of the youngsters
to perform the ceremony of "Lighting the Candle" and
thereafter, a short prayer led us into the service itself. |
Being primarily
a children's service the time span was therefore, shorter than the
norm, all were equipped with shakers and sang heartily to the familiar
songs that formed an integral part of the morning. - Above left
-The actions to the songs enthusiastically demonstrated for us all. |
At this point,
Revd. Cumberlidge asked if anyone had recently had a birthday and
a number of our young guests responded. Two rather delicious cakes
were then produced and the candles duly lit. After a final prayer,
all adjourned to "Ladies Chapel" for the cake cutting and
for refreshments. |
While Mums
and Dads enjoyed a chat and a cup of coffee, the children set about
decorating their order of service leaflets with glitter, paste and
all manner of sticky craft materials. |
Saturday evening gave us the chance to sit and listen to some of our favourite pieces of music played by accomplished organist, and musical director Michael Evans. Michael studied at the Royal Academy of Music and is organist at St.Augustine's church East Hendred and Holy Trinity, West Hendred, he is also choirmaster at St. Mary's Chieveley.
For the first part of the evening Michael played a selection of his own choice that truly showed the versatility of the organ - and proved beyond doubt that the restoration carried out in 2005 had been worth every penny. The second part of the concert consisted of requests from parishioners that included such standards as "Brahms Lullaby", "Edelweiss", "As time Goes By" and "Shall we Dance". A thoroughly enjoyable hour and our thanks go to Michael for his excellent presentation. |
