Gift Week Fund Raising - 2007

So, what and who are behind the bells that have rung out over the village for hundreds of years?  East Garston's current band of Bellringers were in the church to provide some answers, along with some background to this ancient activity.  Maureen, our second most experienced bellringer, Rebecca being the first, gave an in-sight into how she became involved with ringing, and also paid tribute to All Saints' former Tower Keeper, and good friend Douglas Vellender.

Mark, our current Tower Keeper, talked of a true legend among bellringers, the late Revd. C.W.O. ]enkyn, whose credentials can be seen in practically all the Church towers around the district..

Tessa, and her assistant Marcus, gave an informative and polished presentation on the various aspects of becoming a ringer. With the aid of a working model, Tessa was able to demonstrate how a bell moves through 360° to produce the patterns of call changes and methods.

Ultimately all interested parties moved to the ringing chamber where a more "hands on" demonstration began.
Marcus is the Ringing Master for the Newbury Branch of the ODG and is qualified to teach would be ringers from scratch.
Our non-ringing guests were offered the chance to "Pull" on the ropes and under the watchful eye of Marcus and our other experienced ringers, all did so, including Sally, our Churchwarden.
