Farewell Tony
The Parishes Farewell to Tony and Gaynor.
A sparkling evening took place on Thursday 3rd May at the Queens Arms East Garston, when over 100 people gathered to bid farewell to their priest. This has been a favourite venue for church gatherings over the last 8 years, thanks to manager Adam Lyddiard. |

Since
coming to the Lambourn Valley parishes in September 2004 , The Revd
Cumberlidge has brought about an extraordinary change in the church,
most particularly here in East Garston, where it has become a place
of celebration and happiness for many people rather than a few. The
church is now a focal point in the village. Tony has developed the
idea that there are many ways of serving the church and all manner
of contributions are very much welcomed. The church is there for everyone.

Unfortunately
Tony has struggled with health problems since April 2008 and although
he has been able to return for brief periods between operations, a
triple heart bypass operation in November meant that he reluctantly
accepted that he must retire on ill health grounds. Tony and Gaynor
now live in the Diocese of Southwell and Tony has been asked to consider
returning to minister in his new parish, as a retired priest. |

Perhaps
the most significant aspect of Tony’s ministry has been the pastoral
care that he has given to his flock. This is essentially private work
and therefore not talked of and known, but since Tony was so amongst
us in the village and in contact with the goings on in the parish,
he has been able to bring comfort, hope, love, prayers and support,
whenever he was needed. |

East Garston churchwarden, Sally
Wright, paid tribute to Tony saying that he had brought the church
to the centre of the community and made it a place where people were
happy to come. She assured him that he will be very much missed, which
was echoed by all present, but that he had left behind an indelible
mark, which will be always cherished and revered in the minds and
memories of his flock. |

Tony
responded by thanking those who had come to say farewell to him that
evening. Both he and his wife Gaynor were astonished at the size of
the gathering. There were churchgoers, clergy, friends, members of
The Young Families Group and The Air Crew Association to whom he was
Chaplain, and especially pleasing to Tony, was the presence of the
Lambourn Church Choir of whom he has very fond memories. Tony remembered
with great enthusiasm the festivals, celebrations, baptisms and marriages
that have taken place in his parishes. |
|
Toasts
were proposed to The Revd Tony Cumberlidge and then to Tony and Gaynor.
Tony was presented with a cheque for £1,600 so that he could buy a
gift by which he will always remember us. |

Though
an extremely personable gentleman, and informal when the occasion
is right, Tony’s ministry is marked by grace and due reverence. He
is indeed a man of contrasts: traditional as well as innovative; ensuring
that all is done correctly, though appearing spontaneous and unrehearsed.
Perhaps though, the quality that people will remember most, is Tony’s
outstanding gentle kindness. |

We
all wish him great happiness and improved health in his retirement. |
