Featuring
"A Bit On The Side"
Photos by Ken Tarbox
Saturday evening - the 17th of March Live music at the Social
Club read the advertising poster but it wasn't the "Live
Music" bit that inspired me to take a closer look, more
the fact that staring back at me was something just a little
different. The group line up did not consist of the usual
- miserable looking angry young man type line up we are often
subjected too at this type of function.
The group had one of those unforgettable
catchy names that stay in your head for a long long time. "A
Bit on the Side" - The photo on the poster showed two girls
with guitars so I decided there and then to drop in and see
how things panned out, after all if it failed my expectations
I could always leave. Something I have done in the past when
groups have turned out to be complete rubbish.
Well it was a shrewd and inspired decision to attend - These
two girls were absolutely brilliant.
They were friendly, cheerful, and chatty. Most importantly -
they actually enjoyed what they were doing - their enthusiasm
transferring easily to all in attendance.
" A Bit on the Side"
are a successful and entertaining musical duo featuring Debbie
and Helen, two experienced and talented musicians, who sing
and play a large repertoire of popular songs from the 50s through
to the present day, including some 60s rock n roll, 70s disco,
country, pop, waltzes, a few rockier tracks and a selection
of acoustic tracks if required.
The girls take
turns on lead and backing vocals, resulting in some gorgeous
harmonies. Debbie plays keyboards, and Helen plays electric
and acoustic guitar and electric violin, and there’s
even a few numbers where they can show off their dance moves.
We
all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and given the fact that I
myself stayed for the duration - not leaving until around ten
to midnight says much for the quality of music and general ambience
the girls created with their performance. If you missed this
then you missed out on one of the best groups ever to have performed
at East Garston. BUT fear not, you will get another chance to
join us at the social club and to see for yourself just how
good - "A Bit on the Side" - really are. Alan plans
to book the group again once a convenient date can be arranged.
